Aphid Treatments & Insecticides

How to choose aphid treatments

Aphids are small soft-bodied insects that feed on plant sap. They often cluster on new shoots, flower buds, stems and the undersides of leaves, where they can cause curling, yellowing, distorted growth and sticky residue.

When choosing an aphid treatment, start with the plant you need to protect. Indoor plants, edible crops, ornamentals and outdoor garden beds may each need a different approach, especially when selecting an aphid pesticide for vegetables, herbs or fruiting plants.

What is the best aphid insecticide?

The best aphid insecticide depends on the plant type, where the plant is growing and how severe the infestation is. Light aphid problems may be easier to manage with early treatment, while larger outbreaks often need more thorough coverage and repeat checking.

Before using any aphid pesticide, always read the product label to confirm it is suitable for your plant and intended use. For edible crops, check application directions, crop suitability and any withholding period before harvesting.

Signs you may need aphid pest control

Aphids can build up quickly, especially in mild weather and on soft new plant growth. Common signs include:

• Clusters of small green, black, grey, brown or white insects on stems or leaves
• Curled, puckered or distorted new growth
• Sticky honeydew on leaves, stems or nearby surfaces
• Sooty mould developing where honeydew is present
• Ant activity around affected plants
• Weak growth, yellowing leaves or stressed-looking plants

Using aphid pesticide effectively

Good aphid pest control starts with careful inspection. Check growing tips, flower buds, leaf undersides and sheltered stems where aphids commonly gather. Treating early can help reduce pressure before the infestation spreads across the plant.

• Remove badly affected tips or leaves where appropriate.
• Apply treatment according to the product label.
• Focus on new growth, stems and leaf undersides.
• Repeat applications only as directed.
• Check nearby plants, as aphids can move between hosts.
• Monitor for beneficial insects before spraying.

Aphid control in Australian gardens

Australian gardeners may find aphids on roses, citrus, chillies, tomatoes, herbs, leafy greens, ornamentals and indoor plants. They are especially common on fresh new growth, so regular plant checks can make treatment easier and help prevent larger outbreaks.
