Mealybug Treatment

How to choose mealybug treatments

Mealybugs are small soft-bodied insects that often look like white cottony clusters on plants. They feed on plant sap and commonly hide in sheltered areas such as leaf joins, stems, undersides of leaves, pot rims and tight new growth.

When choosing a mealybug treatment, start with the plant you need to treat and where it is growing. Indoor plants, ornamentals, edible crops, succulents and greenhouse plants may each need different product suitability checks before applying any treatment.

What is the best mealybug insecticide?

The best mealybug insecticide depends on the plant type, the severity of the infestation and whether the pests are easy to reach. Mealybugs can be difficult to manage because they hide in protected areas, so thorough coverage and repeat checking are often important.

Before using any mealybug pesticide, always read the product label to confirm it is suitable for your plant and intended use. For herbs, vegetables, fruiting plants or other edible crops, check crop suitability, application directions and any withholding period before harvesting.

Signs you may need mealybug control

Mealybug problems can build up slowly, especially on indoor plants and sheltered garden plants. Common signs include:

• White cottony clusters on stems, leaves or new growth
• Sticky honeydew on leaves, pots or nearby surfaces
• Sooty mould developing where honeydew is present
• Yellowing leaves, weak growth or distorted new shoots
• Ant activity around affected plants
• Pests hiding in leaf joints, crevices or around the base of the plant

Using mealybug pesticide effectively

Good mealybug control starts with careful inspection. Check hidden areas closely, as visible pests may only be part of the problem. Isolating affected indoor plants can also help reduce the chance of pests spreading to nearby plants.

• Remove heavily affected leaves or stems where appropriate.
• Apply treatment according to the product label.
• Target stems, leaf joints, undersides and protected crevices thoroughly.
• Repeat applications only as directed on the product instructions.
• Check nearby plants for early signs of mealybug activity.
• Monitor treated plants regularly, as pests can reappear from hidden areas.

Mealybugs in Australian gardens and indoor plants

Australian gardeners may find mealybugs on houseplants, citrus, succulents, orchids, ornamentals, herbs and greenhouse plants. Warm, protected growing areas can make infestations more noticeable, especially where plants are crowded or checked infrequently.

Choosing the right product for your plants

If you are comparing mealybug treatments, look at where the pest is hiding, whether the plant is ornamental or edible and how advanced the infestation appears. Early treatment, good coverage and correct label use can make control easier.
