Living Soil

What is living soil?

Living soil is a biologically active growing medium containing organic matter and naturally occurring microorganisms that contribute to a healthy soil ecosystem. Rather than acting as an inert growing medium, living soil supports the natural processes that occur around plant roots.

Many gardeners choose living soil to build long-term soil fertility, encourage healthy root systems and create a balanced environment for a wide variety of plants.

Benefits of living soil

• Rich in organic matter and natural soil biology.
• Supports healthy root development.
• Suitable for vegetables, herbs, ornamentals and indoor plants.
• Ideal for raised garden beds, pots and fabric containers.
• Can be maintained over time with quality organic soil amendments.

How to choose the right living soil

The best living soil depends on your gardening style, container size and the plants you're growing.

• Container gardens: Choose premium living soil blends designed for pots and fabric grow bags.
• Raised beds: Larger volumes are ideal for establishing productive garden beds.
• Organic gardening: Pair living soil with organic fertilisers and compost-based amendments for ongoing nutrition.
• Long-term soil health: Refresh the soil periodically with organic inputs to maintain biological activity.

Tips for using living soil

• Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as consistent moisture supports soil biology.
• Use organic amendments as needed to replenish nutrients over time.
• Minimise unnecessary soil disturbance where practical.
• Apply mulch to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperature.
• Follow the recommendations provided with your chosen living soil blend.
