Cactus Pests

Common pests that affect cacti

Although cacti are known for being hardy, they can still be affected by a range of common garden pests. Early identification and appropriate treatment can help minimise damage and keep plants growing strongly.

• Aphids: Small sap-feeding insects that can gather on new growth.
• Soil-dwelling insects: Pests that live in growing media and may affect root health.
• Mealybugs and scale: Common cactus pests that hide in plant crevices and around stems.
• Spider mites: Tiny pests that may become more active in warm, dry conditions.

Choosing the right cactus pest treatment

The best solution depends on the type of pest and where it is affecting the plant.

• Use targeted insect control products for visible pests on stems and foliage.
• Select appropriate treatments for insects living in cactus soil or around the root zone.
• Apply products according to the manufacturer's directions for safe and effective use.
• Inspect nearby plants to help prevent pests from spreading throughout your collection.

Tips for preventing cactus pests

• Inspect new plants before introducing them to your collection.
• Use a well-draining cactus potting mix to promote healthy roots.
• Avoid overwatering, which can encourage some soil pests.
• Regularly check plants for early signs of insects or damage.
• Remove heavily affected plant material where appropriate.

Support healthy cactus growth
