Hydroponic Additives

What are hydroponic additives?

Hydroponic additives are specialised nutrient supplements that work alongside your base nutrient program. Depending on the product, they may be formulated to support root development, strengthen plant structure, supplement essential nutrients or assist with system maintenance.

Rather than replacing your primary nutrients, additives are typically used at specific stages of growth or to address the needs of a particular growing system.

Types of hydroponic additives

• Root stimulants: Designed for propagation, transplanting and early root development.
• Silica supplements: Commonly used to support strong stems and overall plant structure.
• Enzymes: Help break down organic matter and support a clean root zone.
• Bloom additives: Formulated for use alongside flowering nutrient programs.
• Calcium and magnesium supplements: Suitable for growers using reverse osmosis water, coco coir or where additional calcium and magnesium may be required.
• Flushing solutions: Used as part of routine system maintenance or at the end of a feeding program according to the manufacturer's directions.

How to choose the right hydroponic additive

Select additives based on your growing medium, nutrient program and the stage of plant growth.

• Propagation and young plants: Consider root support products during establishment.
• Vegetative growth: Silica and calcium supplements are commonly incorporated into feeding programs.
• Flowering: Choose bloom additives designed to complement your base nutrients.
• Hydroponic maintenance: Enzymes and flushing products can assist with routine system care when used as directed.

Tips for using hydroponic additives

• Always follow the manufacturer's feeding schedule and application rates.
• Use additives alongside a complete base nutrient program.
• Monitor pH and EC regularly to maintain appropriate nutrient levels.
• Introduce one new additive at a time to better assess your feeding program.
• Store products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
