Indoor Plant Soil Mix

Choosing the best soil for indoor plants

The best indoor plant soil mix provides a balance of moisture retention, drainage and airflow around the roots. A quality potting mix helps create the right growing environment while reducing the risk of overly wet or compacted soil.

Different houseplants have different requirements, so selecting a mix suited to your plant type can make ongoing care much easier.

What makes a good indoor plant soil mix?

• Excellent drainage: Helps prevent water from sitting around the roots.
• Good aeration: Allows oxygen to reach healthy root systems.
• Moisture retention: Holds sufficient water without becoming waterlogged.
• Quality ingredients: Common components include coco coir, perlite and composted bark for a balanced growing medium.
• Suitable for indoor containers: Designed for use in pots and planters throughout the home.

Choosing the right potting mix for your houseplants

• Aroids: Monstera, Philodendron and Anthurium generally prefer chunky, free-draining mixes.
• Ferns and tropical plants: Benefit from mixes that retain moisture while maintaining good airflow.
• Peace Lilies and Calatheas: Grow well in well-draining mixes that hold consistent moisture.
• Fiddle Leaf Figs and Rubber Plants: Prefer quality indoor potting mixes with excellent drainage.

Tips for repotting indoor plants

• Choose a pot with suitable drainage holes.
• Use fresh indoor plant soil mix when repotting.
• Avoid compacting the potting mix too firmly around the roots.
• Water after repotting and allow the plant time to establish.
• Feed with an appropriate indoor plant fertiliser according to the product directions.
