FAQs

What exactly is in the No-Till Starter Kit?
Each kit bundles 11 core dry amendments used to build and re-amend living/no-till soil: Alfalfa Meal, Black Basalt Rock Dust, Coconut Meal, Crustacean & Calcium blend, Glacial Rock Dust, Gypsum, Kelp Meal, Kieserite (Magnesium Sulphate), Neem Meal, Onyx (molasses-based amino + K granules), and Volcanic Rock Dust.

What does each ingredient actually do in my soil?
Short version: Alfalfa = growth stimulant (triacontanol); Kelp = 80+ minerals + natural hormones; Neem = balanced NPK + IPM support; Fish/Crustacean = nitrogen, calcium and chitin; Onyx = amino acids + potassium; Gypsum/Kieserite = Ca/Mg/S to balance cations; Basalt/Glacial/Volcanic rock dusts = trace minerals + long-tail re-mineralisation.

Is this No-Till Starter Kit actually “no-till”?
Yep. It’s a dry-amendment set designed to build and then re-amend a living soil you keep using cycle after cycle—add small top-dresses and mineral refreshers instead of dumping soil. (That’s the whole no-till/living-soil ethos.)

How do I use the No-Till Starter Kit to build soil from scratch?
Pick a proven recipe and measure by volume. A common baseline is the “Coots” style mix per ~30 L of base soil: ~½ cup neem, ~½ cup crustacean, plus 1 cup each of rock dusts (glacial/palagonite/basalt) and 1 cup gypsum, then plant straight away. Scale up for your total volume. You can view our list of proven recipes here 👈

What if I’m re-amending an existing no-till bed or pot?
Go light and regular: a light dusting/top-dress of the nutrient meals (neem, kelp, alfalfa, crustacean) with a thin layer of quality compost/EWC over the top helps them mineralise. Many growers refresh minerals (rock dusts + gypsum) between cycles.

Can I overdo it with alfalfa or neem?
Yes—especially alongside other “hot” N sources. If you’re heavy on neem, keep alfalfa modest or use alfalfa teas instead of big top-dresses to avoid N/K lockouts.

How much area/volume will one No-Till Starter Kit cover?
It depends on your recipe and pot/bed size. As a rough frame: the Coots-style recipe in our guide doses by cups per ~30 L. With 11×1 kg bags, you’ll have enough to build or re-amend multiple 30 L batches or refresh a small bed several times. (Dose to your recipe; rock dusts are used at higher rates than meals.)

Do I have to “cook” the soil before planting?
For super-hot “super soil” recipes you rest the mix; for the Coots-style recipe on our site you can plant immediately after mixing because it’s balanced and mineral-forward.

What’s the difference between the rock dusts (volcanic, glacial, black basalt)?
They’re all mineral sources with different profiles: volcanic is broad trace elements, glacial skews higher in iron/magnesium, and black basalt (olivine) brings significant Ca, Mg, Fe and silica. Many gardeners blend two or more for spectrum.

What’s “Onyx” and why is it in here?
Onyx is a molasses-based granular fertiliser (NPK ~11-0-3) rich in amino acids. It’s a gentle microbe-friendly K source that pairs well with rock dusts and meals for steady growth. Apply 25–50 g/m² or per ~30 L potting soil.

Can I use the No-Till Starter Kit with TurboDirt or other living soils?
Yes—use the meals and minerals as light top-dresses between runs, then follow the TurboDirt reuse guide for timing. Keep top-dressings light and let biology do the work.

Will it work in raised beds, pots, and SIPs?
Absolutely. Just size the dose to container volume and keep the surface mulched so microbes stay active and amendments mineralise steadily. (Living/no-till beds shine with mulch.)

Is it okay for lawns and ornamentals, not just veggies?
Yep—these are general organic inputs. Onyx, gypsum and rock dusts are frequently used for turf, ornamentals and trees as well.

Can I combine these with synthetic/hydro feeds?
You can—many growers layer dry amendments with coco/hydro programs to buffer and stabilise nutrition. If you’re on full hydro (NFT/DWC etc.), keep the amendments in a soil/coco zone or net-pot media—not in the reservoir.

What’s the safest way to start if I’m new?
Start with a conservative recipe (e.g., the Coots-style from our guide), mix thoroughly, and avoid stacking lots of extra “boosters” early on. Observe, then top-dress lightly as plants ask for it.

Do I need pH up/down with living soil?
Generally no—balanced minerals (gypsum, basalt, etc.) and biology buffer pH. Excess acid/alkaline inputs can disrupt soil life, so lean on amendments rather than constant pH adjusters.

Will No-Till Starter Kit attract pests?
Meals are organic foods—mulch and a light compost cap reduce odour. Neem and crustacean meals naturally support IPM by adding compounds (azadirachtin/chitin) that help plants resist pressure.)

Is the No-Till Starter Kit pet-safe?
These are natural but concentrated fertilizers—store sealed and out of reach. Don’t let pets eat them. Water in after top-dressing to reduce interest/odour. (General safety practice for all organic meals/minerals.)

How often do I re-amend?
Between cycles for pots/beds, or lightly every few weeks in long veg beds—focus on small, regular top-dresses and a periodic mineral refresh (rock dust + gypsum) rather than big dumps.

Can I substitute an item if something’s out of stock?
Yes—if an item in the bundle is out, we’ll sub a like-for-like product to keep your kit moving. It’s noted on the product page.

Does the No-Till Starter Kit include application rates?
Ingredient pages list typical rates (e.g., Onyx 25–50 g/m²; volcanic rock dust 50–150 g/m²). Our “Create Your Own Fertiliser Blends” guide shows per-30 L recipes you can follow.

Can I use these to make compost teas?
Yes. Kelp and Onyx are common tea inputs; just brew lightly and don’t over-concentrate nitrogen sources.

What pairs well with No-Till Starter Kit for best results?
A good base (quality compost/EWC + aeration), mycorrhizae at transplant, and consistent mulch. Those three accelerate mineralisation and root exploration.

I’m in coco. Can I still use parts of the No-Till Starter Kit?
Yes—use measured dry top-dresses (kelp, neem, small mineral doses) and water with your normal schedule. Dry amendments bring microbial buffering to otherwise inert coco.

What’s the difference between Kieserite and Epsom Salts?
Both supply Mg and S. Kieserite is magnesium sulphate monohydrate (granular, slower), while common Epsom is heptahydrate (fast-dissolving). Kieserite is great for soil applications where you want sustained Mg without big swings.

Any red flags to avoid?
Don’t stack big doses of multiple high-N meals at once; avoid constant tilling (you’ll break fungal networks); and don’t chase pH with harsh acids/alkalis in living beds. Keep it light, mulched, and microbe-friendly.

How should I store everything?
Cool, airtight, and dry. Keep meals sealed (they absorb moisture) and label scoops/cups so you’re dosing consistently.

What about shipping, click & collect, and weight limits?
Free shipping kicks in for eligible orders over specific spend/weight thresholds (excludes WA/TAS/NT); click & collect from Bellambi is available and often ready within ~24 hrs. See the live policy for the current thresholds.

Where can I read more DRGT recipes and rates?
See “Create Your Own Organic Fertiliser Blends” for step-by-step recipes, plus the TurboDirt Grow Guide for reuse/top-dress timing. Ingredient product pages also list usage tips and analyses.

Can I blend these inputs into other DRGT kits/bundles?
You can. If you want fewer moving parts, our Craft Blends (Go & Grow, Bud & Bloom, Nurture All) consolidate many of the same nutrients into stage-specific mixes—handy alongside the rock dusts in this kit.

Who is this No-Till Starter Kit best for?
Growers who want full control over what goes into their living soil—whether you’re building beds for veggies and herbs or re-amending containers for continuous harvests. It’s a straight-shooting toolbox, not a mystery blend.

Anything else I should add to round out a no-till setup?
Mulch (straw/leaf litter), quality compost/EWC for biology, and a mycorrhizal inoculant at transplant. After that, small top-dresses and rock-dust refreshes keep the soil engine humming.

TL;DR: How do I not stuff this up?
Follow the per-30 L recipes in our guide, mix thoroughly, mulch the surface, water in lightly, and re-amend with small, regular top-dresses. Resist the urge to over-feed—no-till rewards patience and consistency.
