Here’s the difference.

Water stress usually affects the whole plant more evenly. Leaves droop, curl or crisp depending on the issue, and the pot weight usually tells a story. Nutrient problems often follow a pattern: older leaves yellowing, new growth paling, edges burning, or veins staying green while tissue yellows.

Spider mite damage is messier. It often starts as tiny pin-prick dots, mostly on individual leaves or sheltered parts of the plant. The top of the leaf looks speckled, faded or sand-blasted. The underside may show fine dust, eggs, shed skins or slow-moving dots.

If you’re unsure, don’t guess. Do this:

  1. Check pot moisture first.
  2. Look at the underside of the worst leaf.
  3. Tap the leaf over white paper.
  4. Use a 10x loupe or phone microscope.
  5. Compare multiple plants in the same room or bed.

If one plant near a warm window is speckling while the others look fine, suspect mites. If every plant in the same dry room is slowly dulling off, still check for mites — but fix the dry conditions too.

Early Spider Mite Damage: Fresh Feeding vs Old Scars

Early spider mite damage does not heal. Once the leaf cells are sucked out, that pale speckling stays there. The plant can grow new healthy leaves, but the damaged leaf won’t magically turn dark green again.

That matters because growers often treat once, still see speckled leaves, and assume the mites survived. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn’t. You need to separate old damage from fresh feeding.

Fresh feeding usually looks like:

Mark a damaged leaf with a bit of soft plant tie or take a phone photo. Check it again in three days. If the same leaf looks worse, or clean leaves now show stippling, the population is still active.

Don’t strip every damaged leaf straight away. A plant still needs working leaf area to recover. Remove the worst leaves if they are heavily webbed or collapsing, but keep lightly damaged leaves if they are still helping the plant photosynthesise.

What Does Spider Mite Look Like Up Close?

What does spider mite look like? To the naked eye, usually just a moving dot. Under magnification, it’s much clearer.

A typical spider mite is tiny, oval and slow-moving, with eight legs as a nymph or adult. Two-spotted spider mites often show darker patches on each side of the body, but colour varies. You might see pale yellow-green mites in active feeding stages, orange-red overwintering females, or whitish immature stages.

Under a loupe or microscope, look for the whole scene, not just one mite:

  • Round, pearl-like eggs stuck to leaf undersides
  • Tiny oval bodies moving slowly
  • Shed skins that look like clear flakes
  • Fine webbing along veins and stems
  • Black or dark specks mixed into the mess
  • Damage directly above the colony on the upper leaf surface

A single moving dot is useful evidence. A moving dot plus eggs, shed skins, stippling and webbing is a much stronger ID.

If the insect is long and thin, think thrips. If it jumps, think springtails or other small insects. If it flies when the leaf is tapped, think whitefly or fungus gnats. Spider mites crawl. They don’t fly off in a panic.

White Spider Mites: Are They Actually Spider Mites?

White spider mites can be confusing because spider mites are not always red. Depending on the species, life stage, food source and season, they can look pale, white, yellow, green, orange, brown or reddish. Young mites, shed skins and eggs can all look like tiny white specks.

So don’t rely on colour alone. A white dot on a leaf could be:

  • a spider mite egg
  • a young mite
  • a shed mite skin
  • dust
  • perlite dust
  • mineral residue from hard water
  • whitefly nymphs
  • thrips cast skins

The difference is behaviour and location. Spider mites usually sit on the undersides of leaves, especially near veins and protected folds. Eggs look like tiny round pearls. Shed skins look like dry translucent flakes. Living mites move slowly when disturbed.
