Description

The perfect, lightweight media for aerating ANY mix!

Perlite is the generic name for naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. AUSPERL is pleased to offer various grades of perlite ore from which expanded perlite products are produced.

We operate our own quarry, in the central North Island of New Zealand as well as importing perlite ore for specific applications from Turkey, Greece and the USA.

The expansion process is caused by the presence of water in the crude rock. When perlite ore is rapidly heated to above 850°c this water vaporises and causes the softened rock to expand. Tiny glass-like bubbles are produced which account for the lightweight and exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) made of?

It’s expanded volcanic rock turned into lightweight, porous white granules. The “P400” grade refers to its medium particle size—ideal for boosting drainage and airflow in potting mixes, coco blends, and hydro setups. It’s pH neutral, inert, and nutrient-free.

What does Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) do for plants?

It improves drainage, increases root oxygen, reduces compaction, and helps prevent overwatering issues. It’s especially helpful for root health and fast-growing plants in containers or hydro systems.

What sizes is Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) available in?

Perlite Medium P400 is available in 10L, 25L, 50L, and 100L bags—giving you options for everything from small houseplants to large garden or commercial setups.

How much Perlite Medium P400 should I mix into soil or coco?

For potting mix: use 20–50% perlite, depending on how much drainage you need. In coco, 70/30 coco-perlite is common for general use, or 50/50 for faster drying. Adjust based on plant type and watering style.

Can I use Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) for seed raising or cuttings?

Yes—perlite holds moisture while allowing excellent air flow, making it ideal for seed starting and propagation. Keep it lightly moist and in a humid environment to avoid drying out too quickly.

Is Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) good for succulents, cacti, or aroids?

Absolutely. It’s great for succulents and cacti due to fast drainage, and works well in aroid mixes (like monstera or philodendron) when combined with bark or coco for balanced moisture and air.

Can I use Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) in hydroponic systems?

Yes—it works in hydroponics, self-watering pots, and drain-to-waste systems. Just avoid loose perlite getting into pumps or lines, and use filters or containers to contain it.

Does Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) hold water?

It holds a small amount of water in its surface pores, but it’s mainly used to improve airflow and drainage. It may dry out mixes faster, so adjust your watering or mix in coco/peat for more retention.

Should I rinse Perlite Medium P400 before using it?

Yes—rinsing removes fine dust that can be messy and irritating to breathe. Dampen it before mixing to reduce float and keep dust under control. A mask and gloves can be helpful for large volumes.

Can I reuse Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) after a grow?

Yes—rinse off roots and debris, sanitize if needed, and let it dry fully. It doesn’t degrade like organics, making it reusable in many cases, especially for large or recurring projects.

How should I store unused Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl)?

Store it dry and sealed to prevent dust leaks or moisture contamination. Properly stored, perlite doesn’t expire and stays usable for years.

Is Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) safe for edible plants?

Yes—it's widely used in food production. Just handle the dry product carefully to avoid inhaling dust, and rinse before use to keep your setup clean and safe.

Can Perlite Medium P400 (Ausperl) cause mould, algae, or gnats?

Perlite itself doesn’t rot, but wet conditions with organic debris can lead to algae or fungus gnats. Keep the surface clean and let the top layer dry slightly between waterings.

What’s the most common mistake with Perlite Medium P400?

Using it dry (dust everywhere) or adding too little to your mix. To get real benefits, use enough perlite to actually change the structure of your growing media, and always rinse before use.
