The Ebb & Flood is similar to the Flo Gro but it floods from the bottom instead of the top which makes it even more efficient than the Flo Gro at supplying oxygen to the roots.

The Ebb & Flood can either be filled with clay pebbles – acting as a large pot, or can be filled with pots containing any growing medium. This bottom-flooding growing system with a timer produces massive yields thanks to the way it provides roots with superb access to oxygen.

The Ebb & Flood produces much bigger harvests than plants grown in traditional pots, but is as simple to use and is more versatile.

The timer triggers the pump to ‘flood’ the bottom of the growing medium and gravity pulls excess solution back into the tank along with fresh air, ensuring the medium is regularly flushed with nutrients and air resulting in a highly oxygenated root zone and huge yields.

The FLOOD -A timer controls how often nutrient solution is pumped up from the tank to FLOOD the growing medium. During floods, the plants take the water and nutrients they need and stale air is pushed out of the root zone .

The EBB – Once the growing medium is flooded to two thirds the solution drains (EBBs) back into the tank, pulling fresh oxygen down directly to the roots.

Bigger Yields – the ‘little and often’ feeding schedule, combined with the highly oxygenated root zone, means a healthier plant and larger yields.

Match feed frequency to the needs of the plant – Provide the perfect conditions for a plant throughout its life-cycle by altering the frequency and duration of feeds. So that nutrient uptake is optimised and yields are maximised.

Versatile – Either grow in individual pots in clay, coco, rockwool or soil, so you can move plants around under lights as and when required, or fill the planter with clay pebbles – so that it becomes a large pot perfect for specimen plants.

Space efficient – The 1.2m2 Ebb & Flood is just 22cms tall to maximise headroom.

Reliable – Built to last for decades with high performance fittings and top quality pumps have unrivalled reliability.

Nutriculture holds the record for the world’s longest tomato plant. It was grown in an Ebb & Flood system.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Flood + Drain System and how does it work?

It’s an ebb & flow hydroponic system that floods the root zone on a timer, then drains back into the reservoir. As it drains, it pulls fresh oxygen into the roots. This cycle supports healthy growth and reduces watering guesswork—ideal for beginners and experienced growers alike.

What’s included with the Flood + Drain System?

The system includes the tray/planter, pump, fittings, returns, and a reservoir. You supply the growing media and pots (if using). Two sizes are available: 170 x 62 cm (narrow) and 118 x 108 cm (square). Check your tent or bench measurements to confirm fit.

Can I use pots or fill the whole tray with clay pebbles?

Yes. You can place pots filled with coco, soil, or rockwool in the tray, or fill the entire tray with clay pebbles for a single large bed. Just rinse clay pebbles thoroughly before use to avoid clogs or sediment buildup.

How often should I flood the system and how long should each cycle last?

Start with short, infrequent floods and adjust based on plant size and environment. Each flood should soak the root zone without oversaturating the top layer. Use a timer to automate consistent cycles and avoid overwatering—especially early in the grow.

Does the Flood + Drain System need to be level?

Yes. A level tray ensures even flooding and proper draining. Pooling or incomplete draining usually means the unit isn’t level or a return is blocked. An optional overflow/standpipe helps control flood height and prevents overfilling.

What kind of pump and plumbing setup does it use?

The included pump is matched to the system. You can upgrade later, but more flow isn’t always better. Use filters to prevent clogs, and check fittings and gaskets for leaks. Avoid overtightening or misaligning connections.

How should I care for the reservoir and nutrient solution?

Keep the reservoir cool, clean, and dark. Use an air stone if needed to improve oxygenation. Monitor pH and EC regularly. Top up as needed and change the solution periodically—especially if it smells off or becomes unstable.

How do I clean and maintain the system between runs?

Drain all water, scrub the tray and reservoir, and sanitize using a light bleach or hydrogen peroxide solution. Rinse thoroughly. During the grow, check for blockages, inspect fittings, and clean any algae or debris buildup.

Can I use this system for seedlings, clones, or just as a runoff tray?

Yes. For small plants, reduce flood frequency to avoid overwatering. It also works as a runoff catch tray if you’re not using flood cycles. Once setup is tested, it can run unattended—but always monitor early to avoid issues.

How do I prevent algae or root oxygen issues in the system?

Limit standing water, avoid overflooding, and shield wet surfaces from light. Poor oxygenation can come from warm water, dirty reservoirs, or overly frequent flooding. Beneficial microbes can help, but keep the system clean to support them.
