What are Dr Greenthumbs Coco Coir Chips 7–12mm?

They’re chunky, washed and buffered coconut husk chips that add airflow, moisture retention, and structure to potting mixes. They’re low in salts (low EC), generally pH-neutral, and designed for immediate use in houseplants, orchids, aroids, and moss poles.

Do I need to rinse or soak Coco Coir Chips 7–12mm before using?

They’re ready to use, but a quick rinse helps remove any residual dust. Pre-soaking is recommended—it helps hydrate chips evenly and blend better in your mix. For coco-heavy setups, a cal-mag soak or light nutrient charge can offer extra stability.

What are Coco Coir Chips 7–12mm best used for?

They're ideal for chunky aroid mixes (Monstera, Anthurium, Philodendron), orchids, moss poles, and improving structure in potting soil. Use them to boost aeration and reduce compaction in indoor, outdoor, or hydro-adjacent plant setups.

Can I use Coco Coir Chips 7–12mm as the only potting medium?

Not recommended for most plants. While chips offer structure and moisture retention, they don’t hold nutrients like soil or compost. They shine as part of a mix—not as a complete medium unless you're growing specific epiphytes or using hydro methods.

Do Coco Coir Chips hold water or improve drainage?

Both. Each chip holds a bit of moisture internally, while the overall chunkiness increases airflow. This balance helps avoid soggy soil while keeping roots evenly hydrated—great for tropicals that hate wet feet but love humidity.

Will Coco Coir Chips help with overwatering or root rot?

They can reduce risk by increasing drainage and preventing compaction. But root rot still happens if airflow is poor or watering is too frequent. Use breathable pots and adjust your mix for your space and habits.

Do Coco Coir Chips attract fungus gnats or grow mold?

Only if kept too wet. Let the surface dry slightly between waterings, increase airflow, and avoid constantly damp environments. Any fuzzy white growth is usually harmless and resolves with better moisture management.

What can I mix Coco Coir Chips 7–12mm with?

They pair well with perlite, pumice, sphagnum moss, worm castings, compost, and coco peat. For aroids, use chips + perlite + base mix. For orchids, combine chips with bark, perlite, and a touch of moss if needed.

Can I reuse Coco Coir Chips?

Yes—if they’re not breaking down. Rinse well, remove old roots, and re-soak or charge with light nutrients if needed. Over time they will degrade, so replace when the mix feels soggy or compacted.

Are Coco Coir Chips suitable for living soil or hydro setups?

Yes. In living soil, they add structure and air pockets. In hydro, they can be used in net pots or chunky blends. Just be sure to keep systems clean and monitor pH and EC if you're recirculating.

Can I use Coco Coir Chips as mulch or top dressing?

Absolutely. They help retain surface moisture and reduce crusting. Just don’t pile them too thick near stems or in pots that already drain slowly.

Are Coco Coir Chips safe for indoor and outdoor use?

Yes—indoors, they’re excellent for houseplants needing breathable soil. Outdoors, they help lighten dense mixes and can be used as decorative mulch or to improve water retention in hot climates.

Which size Coco Coir Chips pack should I buy?

5L is ideal for trying it or a small repot. 15L handles a few medium plants. 30L is great for DIY potting blends, and 45L is best value for regular mixers or moss pole builders. The 7–12mm size suits most indoor pots without being overly chunky.

How do I store Coco Coir Chips?

Keep them sealed, dry, and out of direct sun. If they get damp in storage, let them dry thoroughly before use to prevent mold. Stored properly, they last ages.

What’s the biggest mistake people make with Coco Coir Chips?

Over-relying on them as a “fix.” They improve structure and airflow—but they’re not fertiliser, and they won’t prevent rot if your pot has no drainage. Good results still depend on proper watering, potting, and care habits.
