Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does the Auto Pot Hydropak Starter Kit work?

It's a gravity-fed, bottom-watering system where a Smart Valve controls nutrient flow from a 35L tank. The tray fills to a set level, shuts off, then refills only when plants have absorbed the water—no pump or timers needed.

What comes in the Auto Pot Hydropak Starter Kit?

The kit includes a double tray with two 10" pots, Smart Valve, 35L tank, root mats, perlite/vermiculite mix, 1L nutrients, filter, tubing, and a guide. All components pack into the tank for compact storage and transport.

Is the Auto Pot Hydropak Starter Kit beginner-friendly?

Yes—it’s designed for easy setup and low-maintenance use. Just follow the setup guide, level the tray, top-water for 7–10 days, and keep the valve and reservoir clean. Most issues come from turning it on too early or using dense media.

Does it need electricity or a pump to run?

No. It’s completely gravity-fed. Just raise the tank above tray height (at least 150mm) so the system can flow properly. Power is only needed for optional extras like air stones or circulation pumps.

What does the Smart Valve do, and how do I maintain it?

The Smart Valve controls tray filling—refilling only when plants drink it down. If the tray isn’t filling or is overfilling, check for clogs, debris, or tray leveling. Clean the valve gently with warm water and a soft brush if needed.

What media can I use, and do I need to top-water first?

You can use coco, soil, perlite, clay pebbles, or the included mix—just ensure it’s light and free-draining. Top-water for the first 7–10 days to let roots establish before switching on bottom feeding.

Can it overwater my plants?

Not if set up properly. The tray cycles between wet and dry. To avoid excess moisture, use airy media, level the tray, don’t start too early, and always use the marix root mats to prevent root blockages.

What types of plants can I grow?

It suits a wide range: tomatoes, leafy greens, herbs, tropicals, and houseplants. Works indoors (like in grow tents) or outdoors—just protect the tank from heat and light to avoid issues.

Can I run one pot or mix plant types?

Yes, you can run one pot and leave the other unused—just keep it clean. Mixing plants is fine, but they should have similar feeding needs. You can move pots, but re-level the tray afterward.

What nutrients and additives can I use?

Clean mineral nutrients are best. You can use additives like silica or bloom boosters, but avoid anything that clogs or causes sludge. Organics are riskier and require more cleaning and circulation.

How should I manage pH, EC, and tank changes?

Keep pH in the 5.5–6.2 range. Check pH/EC regularly as they can drift. Change the tank solution every 7–14 days, topping up between. Avoid topping up endlessly—nutrient balance will shift over time.

How often do I refill the tank, and can I leave it unattended?

Refill frequency depends on plant size and conditions. Once plants are large, check daily. You can leave it unattended for a few days or more—just make sure everything is clean, filled, and previously tested.

How do I keep the reservoir clean and working well?

Keep it shaded, cool, and free from light to avoid algae. Use an air stone if desired. Avoid warm, stagnant water and always clean the filter and tank between solution changes.

Do I need to flush or worry about salt buildup?

Yes—occasional flushing helps, especially if you feed heavily. Wicking action can cause salts to accumulate near the top of the pot. A light top-water or rinse can help reset the media.

Can I expand the system or buy replacement parts?

Yes—it’s modular. You can add more pots and trays later using the same tank. Replacement parts like valves, filters, and pots are widely available. Plus, the system packs into the tank for easy transport.
